M51SIM

Summary

M51SIM consists of a set of high-resolution simulations performed with the moving mesh code AREPO aimed at resolving and studying GMCs in the galactic context. The system is modelled to losely represent the interacting grand-design spiral galaxy M51, also known as the Whirlpool galaxy. Important physical ingredients to properly follow the dynamical evolution of GMCs are included. In particular a detailed chemical treatment of the molecular and atomic ISM, star formation via accreting sink particles and stellar feedback in the form of supernovae. The simulation achieves sub-parsec resolutions in the densest parts of the ISM throughout the entire galaxy and allows therefore for statystical analysis of the ISM on GMC scales. The simulation is described in detail in Tress et al. 2020Tress et al. 2021.
